Gold in the mountains and silver in the sea
Gold fever at Lykling
A small boy out minding sheep in an outlying field was
the first to strike gold at Lykling. Ola Olsen Løkling found
"something yellow, that I hammered out to make a
buckle to mend my broken clog". This yellow substance
turned out to be pure gold. But it was not until some
twenty years later that Lykling experienced a gold rush
unparalleled in Norwegian history. People came from all
over the country to prospect for gold. The gold on
Bømlo is virtually only found in gold-bearing rock.
Production was costly and capital was needed to exploit
the find. This was provided by English interests and the
Oscar Gold Mining Co. Ltd was established. This company
was responsible for the most extensive operations in the area, and
the plant they built was the most modern on this side of the
Atlantic.Today all that remains is «Stigarboligen», the mineworkers'
house.
Take a tour through the mine and experience the magic of the gold
and the events that took place here more than 100 years ago.

Espevær, created by the ocean
Out to sea, west of Bømlo, we find the island of Espevær, a unique

century, many people and fishing vessels gathered at Espevær during
the rich spring herring fishing. From the middle of the 18th century,
Espevær was the largest fishing village in Bømlo.

Vast quanities of herring were salted, and 30 large salting sheds
belonging mainly to merchants in Bergen and Stavanger were built
between 1820 and 1860. Hans Jacob Baade, a wealthy ship's master from Stavanger,
built a stately home given the name «Baadehuset» in 1849. The house is
built on old stone foundations from 1692. Baadehuset became an administrative centre for the
